The Halley Appleby Memorial Scholarship for 2020 has been awarded to UQ Rugby Colts player, Zach Hogan, in the lead up to this Saturday’s clash with GPS for the Halley Appleby Cup.
The scholarship is awarded annually and aims to provide assistance to a young apprentice within the Club’s playing ranks in honour of Halley Appleby – the promising UQ Rugby player who tragically lost his life during a Premier Grade game in 2011.
Zach has been a part of the club for two seasons and is currently playing for Colts 2.
He is in his third year of his carpentry apprenticeship.
Zach said he is extremely proud to have received the scholarship.
“I feel very honoured to receive something like this,” he said.
“When talking to other members of the Club who knew Halley, it’s pretty awesome when they tell me that they see a lot of similarities between us,
“I’ll be putting the money towards a new trailer for work, so it will go a long way.”
Zach will be presented the award at the end of year presentation dinner.
UQRFC will take on GPS at Yoku Rd this Saturday for the Halley Appleby Memorial Cup. The two teams play annually for the Cup, with Jeeps the current holders.
