Season 2020 finally came to a close this past weekend with the Brisvegas Rugby 7s tournament held at Wests Rugby Club.
Held across both Saturday and Sunday, the Red Heavies entered a total of 4 teams into the various competitions, with each team raring to go and finish the season off by winning some silverware.
On Saturday, the Social Men’s team came away with a 2nd place finish going down in the Cup Final after a previously undefeated day having topped their pool – a great effort by a group of men who had all been playing and training since the first club pre-season in January.
Featuring an exciting mix of existing Colts, and new recruits to the Heavies, the U20s Boys team officially met each other for the first time on Sunday morning. This, however, did not impact their connection on the field, with the team going on an undefeated run through the pool stage to make it to the Cup Final.
Going up against a strong Easts Colts 1 side, who they had previously beaten earlier in the day, the boys came heartbreakingly close, going down 19-12 on the last play of the day to secure a 2nd place finish.
Playing across both days, our Elite Men’s and Women’s teams showed plenty of grit and determination to make it through the hot challenging conditions.
For our women, the majority of whom were from our AON Development program, it proved an invaluable tournament for building up experience across the squad. They were able to secure the Plate Final with a 24-17 win over Iconz, displaying the significant depth at the club with 10 UQ players also having been selected to play in the QAS Exhibition Series on the Sunday.
Finally, our Men enjoyed one of our strongest 7s tournament showings to date to take out the Cup Final and finish the year for the club with our first trophy, in the last match of the season.
Despite an up and down start to the tournament, with a win and a loss on the first day, the Heavies boys were able to turn it on when it mattered most on Sunday to win 3 in a row, finishing with a thrilling 20-12 win over QPIIM in the Cup Final.
