Club Milestones

1910
1911 |
The University was founded on the 16th April when Sir William Macgregor became the first Chancellor.
The University opened for classes on Tuesday 14 March. The Football Club was formed as one of the Sports Unions founding clubs forty-seven years after Australia’s first club, Sydney University. The Club played in the Queensland Rugby Union secondary schools or college grade. On the 6th of May, the club played its first match, a practice match in readiness for the Queensland Rugby Union season of 1911. The match was against Nudgee College. The first competition game in the competition was played on 15 May against Ipswich Grammar School. The side ran out winners 20 – 3. The Club made the semi-finals but were eliminated when defeated by Past Brothers (Gregory Terrace). |

1912
|
Norman Austin Lloyd captained the University of Queensland side. He was the first State player and was the recipient of the first Rugby Blue. The first University of Queensland inter-college contest was held and was won by the King’s College team.

1914
|
Eric Francis became the club’s First Australian player when he was selected on the wing for Australia in the Tests against New Zealand.

1919
|
The first Rugby Union Intervasity match was played at Sydney University Oval. Sydney Uni won.

1920
|
The Club along with Christian Brothers and Grammar Clubs went over to the Brisbane Rugby League after the Queensland Rugby Union folded.

1921
|
For the first time the University entered 2 teams into the competition.

1928
|
The Club wins its first premiership playing as Amateurs in the Brisbane Rugby League First Grade competition. The intervasity game was played in Brisbane with UQ winning 8 – 7.

1929
|
The Club wins the Premiership for the second year. Tom Lawton became the first player from the club to captain Australia.

|
|
1930
|
The Club returned to the fold of the Queensland Rugby Union. University won its first QRU First Grade Premiership.

|
|
1931
|
University’s Captain, Jim Clark, captained Australia to a 14 – 3 victory over the New Zealand Maoris. He also led University to win the First Grade Premiership.

1932

1933
|
The Club wins the Royal National Association Cup, the cup was awarded to the club securing the largest number of points in all grades. B Grade wins Premiership.

1934
|
First Grade wins Premiership.

1938
|
Vayro Wilson became the second player from the Club to captain Australia and he also captained Queensland. First Grade wins the Premiership. B Grade wins the Premiership.

1945
|
First Grade wins Premiership over Brothers 15 – 6. Reserve Grade team wins Premiership. From March of this year the grounds at St Lucia were made available to the sporting teams despite straying cattle and horses.

The Club wins the Club Championship.

|
First Grade wins the Premiership over Brothers. B Grade wins the Premiership.

1948
|
First Grade defeats GPS for the Premiership and the B Grade also wins the Grand Final.

First Grade wins the Premiership defeating GPS 19 – 3.
The Club wins the Brisbane Club Championship for the second year in a row. The Club purchased its first scrum machine. |

The First Grade wins the Premiership in a close tussle over Souths 18 – 16.
The Club wins the Brisbane Club Championship for the third year in succession. |

1956
|
First Grade wins the Premiership defeating GPS in the Grand Final.
The Club wins the Brisbane Club Championship for the fourth year. All three teams at the Club won there respective Premierships. |

1957
|
First Grade wins the premiership defeating Souths.
The Clubs wins the Brisbane Club Championship for the fifth year. |

1959
|
The Club wins the Brisbane Club Championship. Ken Donald scores 230 points in the season – record.
|
|
|
1960
|
First Grade wins the premiership defeating Brothers.
The Club wins the Brisbane Club Championship for the second year. The Lights on the football oval at St Lucia were erected and turned on. |

1961
|
The pavilion at the St Lucia field was approved in 1961 to be built by February 1962
|

1962
|
First Grade defeats Souths in the Grand Final after extra time and after the bell.
The Clubs wins the Club Championship for the fourth year. Lloyd McDermott is the first Aborigine to play for Australia. |

|
The Club wins the Club Championship for the fifth year

|

1964
|
The Dick Mark’s captained First Grade side defeats Teachers 29 – 9.
The Club wins the Club Championship for the sixth year in succession. |

1965
|
First Grade wins the Premiership defeating GPS 17 – 15.
The Club wins the Club Championship for the seventh year in succession. |
|
|
1966
|
The Club wins the Club Championship for the eighth year in succession.
|

1967
|
First Grade wins the Premiership defeating GPS.
The Club wins the Club Championship for the nineth year in succession. |

1968
|
The Club wins the Brisbane Club Championship for the tenth year.

1969
|
First Grade wins the Premiership defeating Brothers 22 – 14.
The Club wins the Club Championship for the eleventh year in succession. |

1970

First Grade wins the premiership defeating GPS 24 – 6.
|

1972
|
The Club wins the Brisbane Club Championship.
|
|

1977
|
The club saw its largest ever membership (206 players).
The Senate of the University approved in principle a site for the proposed Club House and had plans and a model prepared by a University approved architect. |

1978
|
The Club opened the new clubhouse. The Club wins the Brisbane Club Championship.

|
|
1979
|
First Grade wins the 200 minute Grade final over arch rivals Brothers. The Grand final was played over two weeks after the teams couldn’t be separate after extra time, with the scores 24 – 24. A replay followed a week later and after extra time in the replay Uni prevailed victorious 16 – 13.

1987
|
First World Cup held in New Zealand. G J Martin, M P Lynagh, M T Cook, J S Miller, A J McIntyre and C P Lillicrap were all members of the Australian World Cup Squad.

1988
|
First Grade wins the Premiership defeating Souths 16 – 10.

1989
|
First Grade wins the Premiership defeating Souths.

1990
|
First Grade wins the Premiership defeating Brothers.

1991
|
Second Rugby World Cup held in England. Six players selected in the Australian Squad. Michael Lynagh was the only player from the club to play in the Grand Final.
The Clubs two coaching Directors Bob Templeton and Jake Howard were also part of the squad as Assistant Coach and Technical Assistant respectively. |

Rugby World Cup held in Australia. Nathan Sharpe was the Club’s only Wallaby representative in the world cup team however Nick Stiles was called upon to be a shadow train-on player Club wins Doughty Shield for second consecutive year; Premierships in 2nd Grade, Premier Colts, Colts 1, Colts 2; UQRFC Centenary Tour to Hong Kong and UK included victories over Oxford (25-8) and Cambridge (22-19) |
